TOYOTA recall
Toyota Acceleration Issue - Has Gone Too Far
APRIL 6, 2010
As of last month, Toyota reported a suspension in their sales that included eight models that were linked to many acceleration problems. As many can recall, issues with many of Toyota’s vehicles began in November of last year, when the company recalled over 4 million vehicles, which they claimed the default in the cars were only the floor mats. This theory was greatly questioned when many tests and investigations were completed and several more Toyota “accelerations” occurred, resulting in crashes. After much worldwide attention, Toyota then recalled nearly 3 million additional vehicles, claiming that they had found a major problem with the accelerator pedal. Many of Toyota’s top selling models were included in the January recall. Toyota released a solution to the accelerator problem in November of 2009 that stated the acceleration pedal should be made shorter and the floor mats to be re-designed.
Consumers were advised to remove the floor mats as soon as possible, until the proper safety repairs could be installed. This announcement obviously did not fix any problems. Four individuals from Texas died in December when their 2008 Toyota accelerated, sped out of control, collided through a fence, and landed in a pond. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered that the driver had followed recall instructions to remove the floor mats, which were found in the trunk of the car. From this point on, investigators ruled out floor mats as a cause in this accident. Many believe that Toyota has had knowledge of the sudden acceleration problem for a long time but still refuses to fix the problem fully. The blame has been put on drivers, floor mats, sticking gas pedals, in which Toyota basically walked away from the problems until it became apparent it had to take action. Many consumers feel the real problem includes the electronics of the vehicles. When an automaker quits selling vehicles, you can rest assured they have a major safety problem on their hands.
